Descendants of William Arledge

Generation No. 1

 1.  William /7 Arledge  (Isaac6, Clement5, William4 Aldridge, Clement3, Clement2, John Aldrich/1) was born February 27, 1779 in Randolph Co. NC; HOH 1820 (as ARLIGE), 1830 Highland Co OH (Liberty Twp), and died March 03, 1841 in Highland Co. OH.  He married Sarah [Sally] Bradley July 27, 1802 in Randolph Co. NC.  She was born June 12, 1784 in PA; listed 1850 (p. 166) & 1851 Highland CO OH Paint Twp, and died October 08, 1867 in Highland Co. OH [living with daughter Melissa in 1850 census].

Notes for William Arledge:

William received the sum of one dollar from his father's will, filed August 1818 in Randolph County, North Carolina.  He migrated to Ohio in 1805, and settled in Liberty Township, Highland County, where he farmed until his death.

Not listed in 1800 Randolph Co, NC census, nor was his father. Where were they? However, there is a William Arlidge with no land, 1 white poll, in John Craven's list of taxables (1803, Randolph Co, NC). [from Nancy Martin's Randolph CO, NC research, July 1999]

Tacy Arledge, Laura Frankhauser and Virginia Stout, in "History and Descendants of Isaac Arledge" (1981) write, "Clement and Ann are believed to be the parents of Isaac Arledge, born about 1736 in NC. Isaac was married to a Susannah, named as his "true and loving wife" in his will, filed August 1818 in Randolph Co, NC. Isaac also named three sons--Jesse, William and Isaac... William set out for Highland County, Ohio where he lived the rest of his life."

From Connie Callaway:

William & Sarah Bradley Arledge: Migrated to OH abt 1810.

1830 Census:  OH, Highland Co, Liberty Twp   Pg 008 Arledge William

1840 Census:  OH, Highland Co, Liberty Twp   Pg 121

    1 male 10-15   1825-30   James Q.  1 female 10-15   1825-30 Melissa
    1 male 15-20   1820-25   Jesse       1 female 15-20   1820-25 Mary

  * 1 female 60-70   1770-80  Sarah

It appears that William Arledge & Sarah Bradley, his wife, are members of this household.  William died in 1841 and in the 1850 Highland Co, OH census, Sarah is living with her daughter, Melissa J. Arledge Thompson in Paint Twp, Highland Co, OH.  Cary married Sarah Horten / Horton in 1835...it's possible that the youngest male and female are their children, but who are the other males & females?

The following is from Arlene Arledge Gregory:

Who is  this?  William G. is missing from the census of his parents' family, but didn't marry Emeline Humphries until 1842...could this be a prior wife and child?  The age is consistant w/ birthdate of 1815.  Could it be a different William? It'a too young to be the elder William.

Kate Arledge left home as a young woman and never came back.

My ggrandfather Wm. A. was a twin.  His brother was David P.  Family folklore I've collected indicates that these brothers were separated by the Civil War and following that episode in history Wm. A. spent a considerable amount of time and effort trying to locate his brother.  He searched all over Texas and up and down the rivers working on boats.  He finally left Texas with a herd of cows, sold them and settled in the Cherokee Nation where he met and married my ggrandmother Sarah Springston.  He operated a ferry and hotel of sorts near Catoosa, OK. He and his wife fell victim to the flu epidemic 1894-5.  My grandmmother was orphaned along with her brother and raised (??) by older siblings. My  grandmother is registered with the Cherokee tribe due to Springston lineage.

Hope you may use this.  I would like to know what happened to David A. Arledge and if there are family of his out there.

Pam,
I just recently joined the Southern Ohio Genealogical Society.  I have many
of their books now. Has any one ever told you that Kate Arledge ( daughter
of Jesse Arledge and Emily Taylor ) had a son. It is listed in the Death

died when he was 3 months old . This might explain why she left home. It
gives no father.

favor using both given names. Although I proofread, I can't guarantee
absolutely no mistakes.

Arlene Arledge Gregory <ladyq@midohio.net> wrote in July 1999:

My father, George Frederick Arledge, and my mother, Lucille Irene Shiverdecker Arledge, lived most of their lives on a farm near New Burlington  (Clinton County), Ohio.  They had earlier lived near Bowersville, Ohio, and still earlier near Martinsville, Ohio, where I was born.  Prior to that, they had been tenant farmers in Highland, Fayette, and a couple of other counties.  During much of WWII, we lived near Bowersville, Ohio, where, following a major injury at his job at Patterson Field, Daddy bought garage space in town and started Arledge's All-American Auto Service.  They sold that business, bought a farm on Buck Run Road near New Burlington, and set about farming, with Daddy working as a mechanic for Xenia Standard Auto Parts, later known as Schindler's Auto Parts.  He was a master mechanic, one whose skills were well known. Sometime later this summer, I'll write a bit about the folks and include some photos of those days when we three middle kids climbed over auto parts and grease pans, helping where our young hands could and making a mess just about everywhere.

Born on Willow Street, Hillsboro, Ohio
Earned Bronze Star with combat "V"    WWII
Enlisted in Cincinnati, Ohio on Dec. 3, 1919
Obituary The Wichita Eagle, Wichita, Kansas 2/21/1965

Dolph knew at a very early age that he wanted to be in aviation.  He tried to enlist in the Navy before he was of age but when his true age was known, they sent him home.  As soon as he was old enough he did enlist in the Navy.  He wanted to be a pilot but was unable to pass the eye test.

Dolph played baseball with Navy teams where ever he was stationed and was noticed by the St. Louis Cardinals.  They tried to get him to come join their organization, but he did not feel it was as sure a future as he had in the Navy, so did not sign up.

From the "Skyscrapers" published at the U. S. Naval Air Station, Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn. NY:
"Find a good, hard-hitting squadron and you'll find a good hard-hitting leading chief.
But you'll have to look for him.  A chief like this is never much in the limelight.  He seldom gets a medal; he's to busy with what's considered routine that he has no time for heroics.  He's lucky if he gets an occasional word of appreciation.  But he's a hero nevertheless--the man depended upon for a close-knit, smooth-operating squadron.
Such a chief is ACMM A. E. Asher, USN, former leading chief for one of the Black Cat Squadrons in the Pacific and at present leading chief for the Flight Division.  Chief Asher's work didn't go unrecognized.  Just before reporting to NAS, NY in April he was awarded the Bronze Star with the following citation: "...for distinguishing, himself by meritorious service in connection with operations against the enemy. During the period of 31 December 1943 to 1 September 1944, as leading chief of a Black Cat Squadron, he displayed a high quality of leadership, professional skill, and devotion to duty in efficient and intelligent administration of squadron enlisted personnel and in painstaking supervision of maintenance of aircraft.  He directly contributed to the squadron's record of thousands of tons of enemy shipping destroyed and numerous personnel rescued.  His conspicuous skill and efficient planning very materially aided his squadron in accomplishing on missions during the period stated and have distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character."

Chief Asher's comment on all this was, "I was just a Chief with a lot of headaches.  Our boys flew enough missions to be busy all the time and it was my painful duty to confront air crewmen returning dead-tired from a hop, with a lot of ground work.  It was a night and day proposition with me trying to keep everybody happy."

Moral of any crew depends a great  deal on the leading chief, and in a squadron like the Black Cats, who were called upon so often for night bombing and risky rescue work, Chief Asher could claim a tough job.  But he doesn't.

"Keeping up the spirits of those boys who were knocking off Japs every day was no job at all," the Chief said.  The more work they ad and the more Japs they could get, the better they liked it.  It's tougher to keep up morale around here where there's regular liberty and the boys have time to think about whether or not they're working too hard."

It was Chief Asher's squadron that won the Presidential Unit Citation for piling up an overwhelming score against the enemy--Hitting more than 100,000 tons of enemy shipping, most of which was destroyed.  The squadron sank hundreds of small craft and set an amazing record of rescuing 281 allied personnel from the sea.

The Navy thought so much of the squadron's technique, that a training film was made of its tactics for showing to their airmen.

One of the Black Cats, Piloted by Lieut. N. Gordon, who won the Congressional Medal of Honor made four separate landings in Kaviange Bay, under fire from enemy shore batteries, to rescue 15 Army men.  Another Cat came in loaded with sixty survivors it had picked up of Hostile shores.

This was the type of performance that Chief Asher stayed in the Navy 27 years to be a part of, although he insists that his part was a very small one."

During the second World War he served in the Pacific and Far East.  He took part in the New Guinea Operation and the Bismark Archipelago Operations.  He served in the invasions of Halmahera, the Netherlands East Indies, Leyte and the Phillippine Islands.
