FANNIN COUNTY, TEXAS:  ARLEDGE INFORMATION

Thanks to Carolyn Aldridge and Bob Arledge for their hard work transcribing these records.

DAR References: GRC series 2, v254 (transcribed by Carolyn Aldridge )

For those of you unfamiliar with DAR records, many of these records cannot be found except in the DAR Library because they are records collected by DAR chapters. The above reference contains pages 12-31 which reference Arledge. I will try and transcribe this. When they get into the bible records, the bible page is transcribed, then the following page is a copy of the bible page, so when I skip page numbers that is what it means.

p. 12 ARLEDGE RIDGE CEMETERY

Background: This cemetery in Fannin County 8 miles south of Bonham, Texas on State Highway 11 [NOTE: Robert Thornton Arledge corrects this with the statement: "The Arledge Ridge Cemetery is on State Hwy 78, approx. 3 miles south of Bonham"], has a Texas Historical Commission Marker which reads:

ARLEDGE RIDGE CEMETERY

Among the early settlers of this area were Joseph and William Arledge, brothers, who arrived from Alabama in the 1850s. Both established successful farms in the area, and the growing settlement became known as Arledge Ridge. Joseph Arledge operated one of the earliest freight lines in Fannin County with regular routes to the port city of Jefferson. William Arledge established a cotton gin in the central part of the county and later sold an acre of land to be used for a community school and church.

A tract of land, deeded by William Arledge in 1876, was designated as a community burial ground. According to local tradition, burials may have taken place in the cemetery as early as the 1850's but the oldest documented grave is that of Joseph Arledge who died in 1855.

Interred in the Arledge Ridge Cemetery are many early settlers, as well as a number of Civil War veterans. Additional land acquisitions in 1893, 1948, and 1969 enlarged the cemetery tract. The Arledge Ridge Cemetery Association, organized in 1948 maintains the historic graveyard and sponsors an annual homecoming event.

Some Arledge Family tombstones in the cemetery are:

Joseph C.(Cyrus) Arledge Oct. 19, 1812- Jan. 27,1855 (son of Cyrus and Lacy Featherston Arledge; born in SC.) Lydia A. (Ann) Arledge April 24,1818- March16, 1871 (daughter of James and Sara Wade Slaughter; born in Anson County, N.C.)

Note: This double marker is a replacement stone next to a base for a double stone with the stone broken off. A fragment of the original stone reads "dia A. Arled."

William Arledge Nov 18,1814-Nov. 16, 1894 (son of Cyrus and lucy Featherston Arledge; born in SC) Mary W. Slaughter Arledge Oct. 28, 1819- Feb 21, 1876 (daughter of James and Sara Wade Slaughter; born in Anson county, N.C.)

Note: The wives of William and Joseph Cyrus Arledge, Mary W. and Lydia Ann Slaughter were sisters. Their mother, Sarah H. Wade Slaughter Gray, is also buried in this cemetery. Her surname is misspelled on her tombstone; however, she is buried in the plot with her daughter, Mary W. Slaughter Arledge, and her tombstone matches that of her grandchildren, Clement C. and Martha J. Fletcher; it reads:

S.H. Grey Born 1793 (or 1795) (Anson County, NC) Died April 23 (or 25), 1873

Joseph Cyrus and William Arledge were the sons of Cyrus and Lucy Featherston Arledge.

This survey was made in the late 1991 by Alice Sekanick of the James Billingsley Chapter, Richardson, Texas and, in all probability, does not include all of the Arledge descendants buried in the cemetery. Other Arledge descendants are buried in Willow Wild Cemetery in Bonham,TX.
